Monthly settlement by zone

Generally, most electricity supply rates come from the electric grid known as the Independent System Operator (ISO). Reviewing ISO historical pricing can help in understanding electricity market volatility and complexity. In our reports we summarize historical hourly prices along with futures to provide valuable insights.

RECs and ZECs

The Clean Energy Standard (CES) supports New York State goals of sourcing 100% of electricity from renewable energy through the purchase of renewable energy certificates (RECs) and zero-emission credits (ZECs). While this is a mandatory requirement for all NY energy companies and utilities, Northeastern Power purchases well above the CES requirements to green your electricity use with local and national RECs.

Capacity Prices

Capacity charges are used to pay generators for anticipated electricity demand during the hottest and coldest days of the year, when electricity demand is at its highest. This ensures reliability of your electricity supply. It’s like buying a reserve of energy that will be ready to use whenever needed. If that reserve isn’t available, there won’t be enough electricity to serve New York customers when they need it most for cooling and heating, and that can lead to rolling blackouts. Capacity can account for up to 50% of electricity supply costs in New York.
